In early 2023, residents of Kaysville, Utah engaged CEDS to assist in protecting their neighborhood from the impact of a proposed gas station. The residents had seen the extensive research cited on the CEDS How To Stop Poorly-Planned Gas Stations & Convenience Stores webpage documenting that those living or attending school up to a thousand feet of a gas station could be at risk for adverse health effects. There were a hundred or so existing or proposed homes within the 1,000-foot impact zone as well as an elementary school. CEDS assistance included the health impact letter posted at the following link showing that the proposed gas station did pose a risk and that it was unlikely any measures would resolve the impact: https://ceds.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/UT-Kaysville-Kum-Go-Gas-Station-Potential-Impacts-Letter-2-15-2023.pdf. This led to the undesirable conclusion that the only option was to oppose the gas station. In April the residents convinced the Planning Commission to deny a Conditional Use Permit for the gas station by a vote of 9-1. In September the company wishing to build the gas station sold the site, thus ending the concern, for now at least.
